Yesterday I met with the United Nation's Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, Dr. Ahmad Shaheed. I focussed my meeting mostly on Reyhaneh Jabbari at imminent risk of execution for stabbing a man that tried to rape her. I was informed that a letter is being sent from his office and they are specifically bringing up Reyhaneh's case with authorities in Iran.

I also voiced my concern about the more than 160 children on death row in Iran and the continued executions that take place. Another minor was executed just this month and last year 3 juveniles were hanged. Juveniles , Mohammad Reza Haddadi,Abomoslem Sohrabi and Fatemeh Salbehi are still at serious risk of execution. In fact, with close to 700 executions in 2013 in Iran all round executions have been the highest in 15 years.

I reminded Dr. Shaheed of Saeed Malekpour as it relates to Canadian affairs and presented some reports and documents by fellow activists on Iran's political prisoners and the horrifying conditions in Iran's prisons and lack of proper medical attention including for Seyyed Hossein Kazemeyni Boroujerdi, Muhammad Pourshajari, Hussein Ronaghi-Maleki, Reza Shahabi and Zanyar Moradi, Loghman Moradi a list of Ahwazi Arab prisoners and Afghan prisoners. Many other human rights issues were discussed in our meeting including pertinent questions by Justice Minister Peter MacKay and the lack of the rule of law in Iran's judicial system.

I emphasized the need for further investigations on secret executions in Iran. And I asked if the UN could leverage for better human rights generally via the nuclear dossier.

I would personally like to commend and thank Dr. Shaheed on his diligence and thorough examination into Iran's human rights and his genuine concern for the well being of Iranians. — with Mahvash Afsahi and 11 others. http://j.mp/1q7Lsum KabK22 http://j.mp/GASQd7
